Stinging Nettle (True and False)

For those who do their research on the web and read foreign books on organic gardening, I'm sure most of you have seen or read about this plant or weed. It's one of the best ingredients for composting.
The stinging nettle have a fearsome reputation for, guess what, stinging. They have stinging hairs that come off when it gets in contact with something, even other plants. The hairs becomes a needle that injects several chemicals that gives the victim a burning sensation.
Here are two nettles. Similar but not the same. One is a true stinging nettle and the other one is another kind of nettle. The one at the left is what we need to avoid.

The difference is the flower. I wouldn't dare to touch the one at the left.

A closer look.

In Tagalog, Stinging Nettle is called "Lipang-Aso"

  2. Hello Marky,

Stinging nettle is considered a weed here in the Philippines and is hated for its potent sting. I don't know if anyone is commercially planting this. I know someone who extracts essential oils from plants but he mainly extracts herbs for aroma therapy. If we can find someone with large amount of nettle seeds, we can make nettle seed extract.

  3. Stinging neetle is edible, prepared with risotto, and in many other ways. I never have prepared myself because I do not know how. They say it is delicious and very nutritious, too. From what I have read, their presence is an indication that there is a high concentration of nitrogen on the ground.
I agree, the sting is terrible, it can provoke irritation, it happened to me more than once.Aray!!

  6. Hello Belle,

These are actually weeds. All you have to do is find a mature one and throw them in soil. They are self seeding and will start to spread in no time.

  7. hello,

our group is doing a feasibility study on manufacturing fabrics made out of stinging nettle fibre. do you have an idea where we could probably buy some seeds that we could use for propagation?

this stinging nettle, based on our researches, grow as high as 5 feet. we're not sure though if those same kind of stinging nettle that grow here in the philippines grow as high.

hope you would reply. thank you.
